Starting January 8, 2025, travelers from 42 non-European countries must apply for an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) before visiting the UK. Correspondingly, this new rule aims to enhance border security and streamline entry processes for millions of visitors each year.

Eligible Countries for ETA

The ETA, similar to systems like the U.S. ESTA, is a pre-travel digital authorization requirement. It applies to individuals from countries such as the United States, Canada, Australia, and Japan. In addition, travelers must complete the application process online, making it convenient and accessible for travelers worldwide.

Earlier, during its launch in October 2023, the ETA initially opened for travelers from Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries and Jordan. Specifically, GCC member nations include Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates (UAE). However, a year later, in October 2024, the United Kingdom suspended the ETA for Jordanian nationals, amid misuse and immigrations violations.

As of January 8, the additional 42 countries which must start applying for the ETA are the following:

  1. Antigua and Barbuda,
  2. Argentina,
  3. Australia,
  4. Bahamas,
  5. Barbados,
  6. Belize,
  7. Botswana,
  8. Brazil,
  9. Brunei,
  10. Canada,
  11. Chile,
  12. Costa Rica,
  13. Grenada,
  14. Guatemala,
  15. Guyana,
  16. Hong Kong,
  17. Marshall Islands,
  18. Mauritius,
  19. Mexico,
  20. Micronesia,
  21. Nauru,
  22. New Zealand,
  23. Nicaragua,
  24. Palau,
  25. Panama,
  26. Papua New Guinea,
  27. Paraguay,
  28. Peru,
  29. Saint Kitts and Nevis,
  30. Saint Lucia,
  31. Saint Vincent and the Grenadines,
  32. Samoa,
  33. Seychelles,
  34. Singapore,
  35. Solomon Islands,
  36. South Korea,
  37. Taiwan,
  38. Tonga,
  39. Trinidad and Tobago,
  40. Tuvalu,
  41. United States, and
  42. Uruguay

To obtain an ETA, applicants must provide personal details, travel plans, and passport information. Specifically, the application process costs GBP 10 and typically takes three days for approval.

Furthermore, travelers must apply well in advance of their trip to avoid delays. Once authorities approve the ETA, it is valid for two years or until the passport expires, whichever comes first. In addition to allowing multiple visits during its validity, this flexibility also benefits frequent travelers.

Up Next: European Travelers

While this rule currently affects non-European nationals, it will include the EU. Beginning April 2, 2025, European Union citizens must also obtain an ETA to enter the UK. Specifically, applications for EU travelers open on March 5, 2025, giving them enough time to prepare. Notably, this shift aligns with the UK’s post-Brexit focus on tighter border controls.

Although the ETA requirement applies to many travelers, some exceptions exist. In particular, British and Irish citizens, as well as those holding existing UK visas, are exempt from the ETIAS.

With the extension to EU citizens in April 2025, this policy marks a significant change in how the UK manages its borders. Given these points mentioned above, travelers should act early and consult official resources.
